A Question For Latter-Day Saint Scholars

Suppose I were to ask any scholar in the LDS church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah or at BYU in Provo, Utah, this question: "how many different degrees of heaven and hell are there"??? Every one of them would give the same answer:
1) Celestial Kingdom
2) Terrestrial Kingdom
3) Telestial Kingdom
4) Son of Perdition (which only applies to members of the LDS church)

Well, that is the wrong answer!!!

The correct answer is this:
1) Celestial Kingdom
2) Terrestrial Kingdom
3) Telestial Kingdom
4) Like Unto The Son Of Perdition
5) Son of Perdition

So what is the "like unto the son of perdition" category??? That is what this article is about.

An Observation About The Sophistication of 3 Nephi 29:7-9 In The Book Of Mormon

The Book of Mormon, like the Bible, is an ancient text written by ancient prophets. However, most of the prophets mentioned in the Book of Mormon lived in the Americas. While their civilization started in Jerusalem, the prophet Lehi brought his family and others over to America in about 600 B.C.!!!

Hundreds of years later, shortly after the resurrection of Christ, in about 34 A. D., the Savior Jesus Christ came to America to visit his "sheep" in America. See the Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 16 (the Savior is speaking when He first arrives in America):
Book Of Mormon - 3 Nephi 16

The Book Of Mormon is one of the "standard works" in the Mormon (i.e. The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints) church, which means that it was originally written by true prophets of God. In the case of the Book of Mormon, most of these prophets lived in the Americas long before Columbus arrived here in 1492. In fact, the versus I quote were probably originally written in about 355 A.D.!!!

Some of the descendants of the Book of Mormon people who came to America are called American Indians. But this was after many, many wars.

It is the prophets of these people who wrote the Book of Mormon. Let me give you an example of how incredibly precise the Book Of Mormon is for us today. I will only talk about 3 versus in the Book of Mormon: 3 Nephi: 7-9. It is the incredible accuracy of these three versus that I will talk about in this article.

Let me quote 3 Nephi 29:5-7 in the Book of Mormon:

5 Wo unto him that spurneth at the doings of the Lord; yea, wo unto him that shall deny the Christ and his works!

6 Yea, wo unto him that shall deny the revelations of the Lord, and that shall say the Lord no longer worketh by revelation, or by prophecy, or by gifts, or by tongues, or by healings, or by the power of the Holy Ghost!

7 Yea, and wo unto him that shall say at that day, to get gain, that there can be no miracle wrought by Jesus Christ; for he that doeth this shall become like unto the son of perdition, for whom there was no mercy, according to the word of Christ!".

You can hopefully see it online:
Book Of Mormon: 3 Nephi 29:5-7

For Latter-Day Saints the punishment of being a Son of Perdition is the worst possible sin/punishment and it applies only to Latter-Day Saints. So I would assume that the punishment of Like Unto The Son Of Perdition would be the worst possible sin/punishment for non-members of the church!!!

You can also look at these three versus as a prophesy of what kind of people will exist in the last days!!!

Let me change to a different issue.

Why didn't Nephi (the Nephi who wrote the book of 3 Nephi who lived in the fourth century A.D.) say that the atheists and evolutionists in our day would claim that Christ never existed instead of saying that Christ did not perform any miracles???

Let me repeat that because it is the core of this article:

Why didn't Nephi (the Nephi who wrote the book of 3 Nephi who lived in the fourth century A.D.) say that the atheists and evolutionists in our day would claim that Christ never existed instead of saying that Christ did not perform any miracles???

The reason is that God knew (and thus His prophet Nephi knew) that the people in the last days would have plenty of evidences that Christ existed - even other than the Bible!!! So there was no reason for Nephi to say that people in the last days would question that Christ existed. Anyone who claims that Christ did not exist needs to do their homework.

For example, see this very excellent website:

Here is another excellent article on this subject:

Here is Part 1 on a website on this subject:

Here is Part 2 on the same website:
Article: Jesus Outside the Bible: Part 2 – Flavius Josephus

Here is Part 3 on the same website (this article has a HUGH LIST, but not all of these ancient writers mentioned Christ):
Article: Jesus Outside the Bible: Part 3 – Pliny, Tacitus and Suetonius

And I am sure that there are many more ancient evidences that Christ was a real person!!!

Now let's talk about today.

Here is an article by William Lane Craig, who is a very well-known creation scientist!!! But his approch is a little different:

My Comments

My point is that the atheists and evolution cannot claim that Christ did not exist!!!!! So the only thing they can claim is that Christ was not a God and that the scriptures were wrong and that Christ did not perform any miracles!!!!

That is precisely what the Book of Mormon predicted would happen!!!!!!

It just blows me away at how accurate the versus in 3 Nephi 29 are!!! Heavenly Father knew, in about 355 A.D. (shortly before the last Book of Mormon prophet completed the Book of Mormon in 421 A.D.), that people in the latter-days would have many evidences (other than the Bible) that Christ did in fact exist and Heavenly Father knew that the only thing the atheists and evolutionists could say in our day, in order to criticize Christ and His followers, was to say that the Bible was wrong and that Christ did not perform any miracles!!!

Every once in awhile I will stop things and make a comment about Heavenly Father. He was and is and always will be AMAZING!!! Of course, so was and is the Savior and the Holy Ghost. All three of them are Gods.

Getting back to 3 Nephi 29:5-7, a person might wonder who might qualify for the Like unto the Son of Perdition category. Their first guess might be Hitler or Stalin or Mao Zedong. But that is not correct!!!!

If you look at the criteria it is very clear that the scriptures were talking about professional atheists and evolutionists, who mock the miracles of Christ, and thus may qualify for that punishment. The key is that these are professional atheists and evolutionists (i.e. "to get gain") who do these things. So I seriously doubt that students, even college students, and teachers could qualify (that is very, very fortunate for them).

I theorize that these versus might apply to people like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett and the late Christopher Hitchens who all made significant amounts of their income from pushing the theory of evolution (e.g. getting paid for writing books, giving lectures, participating in debates, etc) and in the process they all mocked the miracles of Christ (I personally researched this). Perhaps hundreds of other professional atheists and evolutionists may be at risk for that punishment.

In a speech given at Brigham Young University Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, of the Quorum Of The Twelve Apostles, talked about the history of the word "religion" and the word "secularism". While those were the two main categories he talked about, at one brief moment he changed the subject and made this statement:

  • "But of course not everyone agrees that religion does or should play such an essential role in civilized society. Recently the gloves have come off in the intellectual street fighting being waged under the banner of the “New Atheists.” Figures like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, and the late Christopher Hitchens are some of the stars in what is, for me, a dim firmament.

These men are as free to express their beliefs — or, in their case, disbeliefs — as any other, but we feel about them what one Oxford don said about a colleague: “On the surface, he’s profound, but deep down, he’s [pretty] superficial

50 Top Atheists in the World Today

But whether a person crosses the line into the realm of the like unto the son of perdition category is solely the decision of God. We can do the research and make guesses (of course God knows a lot more than we know) but ultimately it is God alone who will determine who "crosses the line."

I cannot imagine a case where this would apply to a high school student or a high school teacher or even a college student or a college teacher, these versus seem to apply only to the professional atheists and evolutionists who make a significant part of their living critizing the teachings in the Bible. But only God can make the final judgment!! In addition, even some people who come close to qualifying may repent in time to avoid the punishment.

But what I want to emphasize is that these three versus indicate the seriousness that God takes regarding those who push the theory of evolution (for profit) and in turn they mock the claims in the Bible such as the miracles of the Savior Jesus Christ!!!

And we don't know how many of these kinds of people will cross the line by the time of the Second Coming!!!

Here is another list, but this time it is evolutionists and this is only a small sample:
List Of Top 10 Evolutionary Biologists In History

And the Book of Mormon, from which these three versus in 3 Nephi came, was completed in 421 A.D. but was not translated and published until 1830. But this year was before Charles Darwin published his first evolution book in 1859!!! God was predicting these things long, long before the theory of evolution even existed!!!

Doctrines Which Are The Exact Opposite Of Key LDS Doctrines

Suppose you made a spreadsheet and in column one were the doctrines of the LDS church:
1) Heavely Father is the God over all,
2) Jesus Christ is in the Godhead and He was and is and always will be the Savior of the world and He is next to Heavenly Father in authority,
3) The Holy Ghost is also a member of the Godhead and He has a very important function in the church,
4) There is a living prophet on the earth. Actually there are 15 living prophets on this earth at any given time,
5) And so on.

Now suppose you listed the the exact opposite of the first list. It would look like this:
1) The claim there is no God (i.e. that Heavenly Father is the head God in the Godhead),
2) No one can claim that Christ did not exist, so they can only claim that Christ did not perform any miracles to indicate that there was no Godhead,
3) They claim there is no Holy Ghost,
4) Without the Godhead there cannot be any prophets,
5) An so on.

Note that item #2 in the second list is EXACTLY what Nephi predicted would happen in the Book of Mormon in the last days!!!!

Well, as I and many, many others can clearly testify, we know that all three members of the Godhead are very much alive and well and they truly are Gods!!!
